THE NOBEL PRIZE The Nobel Prize was created in the 19th century by Alfred Nobel — a Swedish inventor, who made a fortune from the invention of dynamite ['dainamait] and other explosives. Nobel, when he was going to die in 1896, willed that the income from the most of his fortune be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who during the preceding year have made the greatest contribution for the welfare of mankind. Since then the most outstanding men of science and culture are awarded this prize. The ceremony of awarding the prize takes place in Stockholm's Concert Hall where the King of Sweden himself presents gold medals, diplomas and the Nobel Piece Prize to the laureates ['lorruts] in physics, chemistry, literature, medicine and technique. 87*.
